A living memorial
The RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight preserves and flies historic aircraft to commemorate those who served. Its aircraft appear at commemorations and air displays, with flying subject to maintenance, weather and operational availability.
Three aircraft, different wartime roles
The Spitfire and Hurricane fought in the Battle of Britain in 1940. The Lancaster first flew in 1941 and entered operational service in 1942, so it did not take part in the 1940 battle. Together in the modern memorial formation, the fighters and bomber represent different parts of the RAF's Second World War story.
What to look for
Look for the four-engined Lancaster with twin tail fins alongside the two single-engined fighters. The Spitfire's distinctive elliptical wing helps distinguish it from the Hurricane. All three must be flying together in the same photograph to qualify for this formation card.
